The Lincoln Journal Star reported yesterday that Shawn Watson, the University of Nebraska’s offensive coordinator, appears to be one of the front-runners for the head coaching position at Miami of Ohio. Despite Watson’s reluctance to address the issue, our analysis suggests that he has already accepted the position and is merely waiting until after the Huskers’ Holiday Bowl appearance Thursday night to confirm the move.
Following Monday’s practice, Watson refused to answer a question regarding his interest in any head coaching jobs, instead replying, “I don’t want to do that. That’s not what’s important this week.” His use of the qualifier “this week” indicates to us that a decision has been made and that an announcement is imminent.
Specifically asked when Miami of Ohio might try to fill its head coaching position, Watson’s response was both overly polite and inconsistent when he said, “I have no idea, buddy. I have no idea. I’m sure they’re going to get something done soon, though.” Only someone with detailed knowledge of the process would know that something would be done soon.
Equally revealing is Watson’s frequent use of the past tense when addressing what lies ahead. Watson said he’s appreciated the support of Coach Pelini and Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne. “They’ve been awesome. They understand,” Watson said. “Coach Osborne has been a great mentor to me and Bo has been a great friend.” The literalness of Watson’s comments suggests that these conversations with Pelini and Osborne have already taken place, and that Watson will soon be Miami of Ohio’s new head coach.
